PSP and education

from: ConnectED

Government and leading educationalists identified that internet enabled handheld devices such as PDA's and other 'Smart phones' can improve the access to rich multi media educational content in the classroom, across the campus and at home. Recent pilots at places (such as Wolverhampton in 2005 / 2006) have endorsed the use of these handheld devices with teachers and students alike.

The PlayStation Portable (PSP) although designed as a 'gaming device' has all the criteria that will drive an increasing handheld agenda in education. It is already pervasive as over 2 million under 25 year olds have already bought the device and using it in their homes. PSP provides great levels of accessibility through its wireless browser to deliver RSS, Podcasting, Virtual Learning Environments and streaming video, combined with a price point which is significantly lower than any other PDA. PSP is a stable and robust hardware device with a legacy of extended use as PlayStation and PlayStation 2 demonstrates.

ConnectED has spent the last 3 months working with teachers, students, schools and LEAs validating the use and pedagogy for PSP into education. Working with Edunova, to implement pedagogy within the classroom and top educational brands like RM and Espresso there is now a growing body of evidence to demonstrate that the use of PSP in mainstream education will be a critical feature in building schools for the future.
