Since 2005, the RME conference has focused on strictly mathematics as the sole content area of interest. From 2013 we endeavor to open up the RME conference to studies in mathematics and/or science education, to promote productive intra- and inter-disciplinary discussions about ways in which contexts and representations promote student reasoning.

Theme - The Development of Mathematical and Scientific Reasoning through Contexts and Representations in Science, Technology and Mathematics

2011 - III

Theme - Learning progressions in mathematics and the design and use of learning trajectories. Plenary and interactive breakout sessions have explored the research on learning progressions in mathematics and the design of instructional sequences that engage the mathematical reasoning of all learners.

2009 - II

Theme - The principle of progressive formalization, which has been noted in How People Learn as a promising approach to mathematics education. Building on thematic strands from the 2005 RME conference in Madison, plenary and interactive breakout sessions explored more specifically how progressive formalization informs applications in ways that engage the mathematical reasoning of all learners, and support the development and use of formative assessment.
