Classroom materials for STEM

Abstract
In this activity students work on several puzzles concerning a rope which they can solve by working with variables.

The work on variables is twofold:
- Students determine how variables refer to varying unknowns and,
- students construct and use expressions with variables to solve the puzzles.

The task doesn’t prescribe a solution procedure. This openness of the task allows for diversity in chosen strategy as well as in the level of achievement. Students can discuss and support each other.
