Planned contribution to ISDDE 2008

I will present information regarding the use of a task-based lesson design to develop conceptual understanding, enhance existing procedural skills, promote positive affect and expand perceptions of the nature of mathematics within the framework of a one-semester mathematics content course for pre-service elementary teachers. Elements of the task design include:

1 unpacking the mathematical topic under consideration in terms of its underlying structure, relationship to related, as well as, fundamental principles and its position within a carefully articulated mathematical learning trajectory;

2 identification of context (mathematical, or real-world) that begs to be organized by the construct under study;

3 creation of an open-process task that permits entry and active engagement from a range of skill and conceptual levels;

4 orchestration of the classroom processing of selected students' solutions that exhibit the underlying mathematical structure through their variety of approaches; and

5 creating a learning environment that is similar to that advocated by reform efforts at the K-12 level.
