Bio sketch

I taught Biology, most recently at Reigate College, where I was Head of Science and Design Technology until December 2000.

I have been working at the Nuffield Curriculum Centre since leaving teaching, as codirector for the Salters-Nuffield Advanced Biology project (SNAB). I have also been involved in the 21st Century Science project, Science for Public Understanding and Learning Skils for Science. I am currently writing for the new A level course text 'Science in Society'.

For three years I was director of the London Science Learning Centre, involved in professional development for science teachers and technicians. I returned to Nuffield as director of the curriculum centre in April 2007.

I am studying for a PhD at the Institute of Education, University of London, looking at the affordances of ICT tutorials. This work is based on my currciulum development work for SNAB.

Field of interest

I work in curriculum development, mainly in science education. This involves researching, producing and trialling curriculum materials.

Chosen topic group (but also interested in)

Chosen topic group: Curriculum and Software

Planned contribution to ISDDE 2008

Salters-Nuffield Advanced Biology (SNAB) is a curriculum project supported by a dedicated virtual learning environment, which includes downloadable resources and electronic tutorials. My research focusses on what are the particular affordances of ICT tutorials, and how the findings can feed into curriculum development. I have used SNAB students working in pairs, and compare students working on ICT tutorials with those working on an equivalent paper tutorial.

Expectations for this conference

Expectations

I hope to meet people interested in curriculum development from other countries and share ideas.
