There are four areas on which Competency-based education focusses (Van den Berg & De Bruijn, 2009):


  • Workplace learning: VET designs its curricula by enlarging the practice component, improve the guidance students get on the workplace and establishes a better cooperation between school and organizations concerning workplace learning.
  • Deep learning: Both learning in school and learning on the workplace should stimulate student into critical reflection.
  • Self-regulating learning: In order to meet the raising demand for autonomous workers students are taught regulate their own working and learning both in school and on the workplace.
  • Collaborative learning: Collaboration is needed in most of the functions in the world of work and that's why students are taught to collaborate although less emphasis is put on this point of VET.
  • Customized learning: Learning should be a flexible process and should be able to be costumized according the situation in which a students find (him) herself
