International Commission on Mathematical Instruction

## Background

Founded in 1908 to foster efforts to improve worldwide the quality of mathematics teaching and learning, the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction fulfils its mission through international programmes of activities and publications that promote reflection, collaboration, exchange and dissemination of ideas and information on all aspects of the theory and practice of contemporary mathematical education.

## ICMI Awards

The Executive Committee of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction has decided to create two awards in mathematics education research, at its annual meeting in 2000 :

- the Hans Freudenthal Award, for a major program of research on mathematics education during the past 10 years
- 2007: Anna Sfard
- 2005: Paul Cobb
- 2003: Celia Hoyles

- the Felix Klein Award, for lifelong achievement in mathematics education research.
- 2007: Jeremy Kilpatrick
- 2005: Ubiratan D'Ambrosio
- 2003: Guy Brousseau

These awards will consist of a certificate and a medal, and they will be accompanied by a citation. They should have a character similar to that of a university honorary degree, and they shall be given in each odd numbered year. At each ICME, the medals and certificates of the awards given after the previous ICME will be presented at the Opening Ceremony.
