General

Background

The idea came from the experiences with National Arithmetic Day (in 2015, about the same subject). Key issues:

  • Is it possible to make a bridge between the (educational) work of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and the mathematics lessons (grade 5 and 6) in primary schools in Rotterdam
  • What do teachers need to help support this bridge

In this study we are setting up a program in which art and math education (geometry) are combined, to increase creative problem solving in grade 4, 5 and 6 of primary school. The study is in collaboration with educational department of Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, two primary schools and two institutions of higher education (teacher education)

Research Questions

  1. Are there successful projects in the Netherlands or abroad that focus on this same bridge between art and mathematics (especially geometry)?
  2. Whatskills are needed for teachers (and educational workers from the museum) to support this bridge?
  3. Do students improve on mathematics (and creativity) when this bridge is made?
